The funeral for Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. local time in the Portuguese town of Gondomar.

The brothers tragically lost their lives in a car crash near Zamora, Spain, on Thursday.

The service will be held at the Matriz de Gondomar church, approximately 33 kilometres from Porto. A wake is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. local time on Friday, as reported by ESPN.

The bodies of the two arrived in hearses shortly before midnight in Gondomar, André Silva's birthplace, and were greeted with applause from local residents.

Spain's Guardia Civil has stated that the investigation into the accident's cause is ongoing. Initial findings suggest a possible blown tire during an overtaking maneuver.

A Spanish government official, Ángel Blanco, confirmed on Thursday that the vehicle was completely burned, with the two individuals inside.

According to Miguel Gonçalves, a Portuguese physiotherapist who recently treated Jota, the Liverpool forward had been advised to travel by car rather than fly after undergoing minor surgery on his right lung at the end of the season. Jota recently won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.

"The base of his right lung had collapsed slightly, but with post-operative physiotherapy, he was nearly fully recovered," Gonçalves told Record of Costa, as cited in Marca.

"When I last saw him, he was pain-free and preparing to return to Liverpool. He mentioned the trip would take about eight hours, with a stop at a hotel in the Burgos area for rest. Diogo was highly professional. They planned to reach Santander, take the ferry, and then proceed to England.

"The family intended to follow later by plane, and he had a doctor's appointment scheduled in Liverpool on Monday to review his condition. I worked with him from last Saturday through Wednesday and bid farewell at dinner time."

Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes, traveled to Zamora to support the players' family.

In a heartfelt statement to reporters, Mendes said: "We have lost two extraordinary individuals. Diogo was an exemplary person, husband, son, and professional. I still can't believe it; it's incredibly difficult."

Portuguese second division club Penafiel, where Silva played last season, has declared a day of mourning and will honor the player at future sporting events.
