Bosnia striker Edin Džeko was unfortunate to be kicked in the nose by an opponent in this morning's World Cup qualifier.
Bosnia beat Romania 1-0 away in the first round of European qualifying for the World Cup. However, there was an accident on the pitch in the 34th minute. Džeko was fouled from behind by Romanian defender Popescu as he attempted to head the ball home and suffered a direct facial injury. Džeko fell to the ground covered in blood. Despite receiving emergency treatment, Džeko insisted on finishing the first half but was substituted at half-time.
According to Romanian media outlet digisport, Džeko's nose bridge was confirmed to be broken and he was immediately taken to a local hospital for further treatment. Media analysis suggests that Džeko is likely to miss Bosnia's next World Cup qualifier against Cyprus.
It is puzzling that the referee did not show Popescu a yellow card after witnessing such a serious foul. Romanian star Stelea, who was working as a commentator for the game, was unhappy with the decision. He said: "This is clearly a red card. Whether Popescu intended to kick or not, the important thing is that he kicked his opponent directly in the face. I have never seen that before!“
