Borussia Dortmund withstood a fierce second-half comeback from Monterrey to secure a 2-1 victory in the Club World Cup round of 16 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Tuesday, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Precise goals from Serhou Guirassy in the 14th and 24th minutes gave Dortmund the lead at halftime, but Germán Berterame responded for Monterrey in the 48th minute, as the Mexican team pushed aggressively for a draw until the end.

Dortmund's defense remained resolute, setting up a quarter-final clash against 15-time European champions Real Madrid in New Jersey on Saturday.

However, there will be no family reunion for the Bellingham brothers, as Dortmund's Jobe received a yellow card in the 28th minute, ruling him out of the match against his brother Jude at Real Madrid.

The opening 10 minutes were intense, featuring strong tackles and a notable long-range shot from Monterrey's Nelson Deossa as the best early attempt.

Dortmund's attacking duo, Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi, combined effectively in the 14th minute, with quick passes allowing Guirassy to fire the ball into the near post.

Monterrey's left winger Jesús Corona struck the outside of the post with a cross-shot, and another Deossa effort tested goalkeeper Gregor Kobel shortly after, but Dortmund quickly extended their lead.

Julian Ryerson dispossessed an opponent with a strong challenge and delivered a long ball to Adeyemi, who controlled it well before setting up Guirassy for an easy finish past goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.

Guirassy missed opportunities for a hat-trick before the break, squandering clear chances from passes by Bellingham and Pascal Gross.

Monterrey mounted a spirited response in the second half, quickly halving the deficit when Corona delivered a curling cross to the far post, where Erick Aguirre headed it back for Berterame to nod in past Kobel.

Monterrey continued their assault, with Corona having a shot saved and another sailing over the bar, while Berterame scored from an offside position that was disallowed.

Substitutions around the 70th minute helped Dortmund regain composure, and Guirassy created a few half-chances for a third goal before Monterrey resumed their attacks.

Sergio Ramos pushed forward in search of an equalizer, grazing the outside of the post with a header in the final seconds, but the Spanish veteran could not deliver a dramatic finish.
