Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey will face off in the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday, competing for a spot in a high-stakes quarter-final against either Real Madrid or Juventus. The German powerhouse advanced from Group F to secure this matchup with the Mexican team, which finished behind Inter Milan in Group E.
Borussia Dortmund is maintaining the momentum from the end of the Bundesliga season, where they won their final five matches, and they have yet to taste defeat in this year's Club World Cup. As the runners-up in the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League, they were favored to top Group F, and they succeeded, though earning 7 points from 9 matches doesn't fully capture their potential. In fact, under Niko Kovac, the team drew 0-0 with Fluminense in their opener, then dominated Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa with a 7-0 victory, and edged out Ulsan Hyundai by a single goal.
In their final group match, Jude Bellingham delivered his first assist for Dortmund, setting up left-back Dan-Axel Zagadou for the winning goal in a 1-0 win, which proved crucial for Kovac's squad throughout the group stage. While Dortmund's Group F performance wasn't extraordinary, this Bundesliga giant is on a 10-match unbeaten run across all competitions as they head into the knockout phase, despite a 4-0 loss to Barcelona in their last Champions League game.
Monterrey began with a solid draw against Inter Milan, followed by a 0-0 stalemate with River Plate, and then took on Urawa Red Diamonds. Trailing the Argentine side by two points, their progression was uncertain. However, Inter Milan's 2-0 win over River Plate aided Monterrey, and Domenech Torrent's team sealed a 4-0 victory over Urawa, overtaking the South American side in a devastating 540-second spell.
Between the 30th and 39th minutes, Nelson Deossa, Germán Berterame, and former Porto forward Jesús Corona each scored, with Berterame adding another in stoppage time. The Mexican five-time champions, who just ended a three-game losing streak, are preparing for their first official match against a German club, while Dortmund will encounter a Liga MX team for the first time.
Borussia Dortmund predicted starting lineup:
Kobel; Ryerson, Anton, Bensebaini; Kutz, Sabitzer, Enemecha, Svensson; Adeyemi, Bellingham; Fullkrug
Monterrey predicted starting lineup:
Andrada; Chavez, Medina, Ramos, Arteaga; Deossa, Rodriguez, Torres; Corona; Alvarado, Berterame
