Manchester City's new signing Omar Marmoush scored a hat-trick in 13 first-half minutes in a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, making a strong statement since joining the club last month.
James McAtee added a late consolation for Pep Guardiola's side, who recorded their biggest win of the season at the Etihad to move up to fourth on 44 points, while Newcastle slipped to seventh on 41.
"The way we played, we remembered what we were and what we have not been this season," Guardiola said. "We always try, but sometimes we cannot do it. We need to win these games to qualify for the Champions League. We have to make this kind of performance to send our people home happy."
Marmoush put the hosts ahead in the 19th minute when City goalkeeper Ederson's long pass was misjudged by defender Kieran Trippier and the Egyptian lobbed the ball over the onrushing Martin Dúbravka.
The 26-year-old doubled his tally five minutes later when he latched onto Ilkay Gündogan's through ball before unleashing a low shot that took a slight deflection off Trippier.
The striker completed his hat-trick in the 33rd minute with a thunderous shot from 12 yards after Savinho found him in space.
McAtee struck in the 84th minute, nine minutes after coming on, volleying home Erling Haaland's corner at the near post.
There were tense moments as City's goal-machine Haaland limped off with his knee, while a distraught Guardiola cradled his head in his hands, but he was able to walk off after receiving medical attention.
The emergence of Marmoush, who City paid £59m ($74.25m) to sign from Eintracht Frankfurt, as a genuine attacking threat is a huge boost for an injury-hit side.
Marmoush received a standing ovation from the raucous Etihad Stadium crowd and high-fives from his teammates as he came off in the second half, and walked proudly into the tunnel at the final whistle with the match ball under his arm.
