A second-half header from Edson Álvarez gave Mexico a 2-1 win over the United States and their 10th Gold Cup title in a frenetic final at Houston's NRG Stadium on Monday.
Chris Richards put the U.S. ahead in the fourth minute with an impressive header that just made it over the goal line. However, Raúl Jiménez equalised before half-time with a precise finish past U.S. goalkeeper Matthew Freese.
After scoring, Jiménez paid tribute to his former Wolverhampton Wanderers teammate Diogo Jota, who was killed alongside his brother André Silva in a car crash on Thursday.
With Mexico dominating possession and creating chances, Álvarez connected with a set piece and flicked the ball past Freese to put Mexico 2–1 ahead. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but was awarded following a video review, sending the predominantly Mexican crowd into a frenzy.
Mexico, the defending champions, won their 10th Gold Cup title with this victory. The U.S. has won the Gold Cup seven times, while Canada has won it once. Sunday's game was the eighth time that Mexico and the U.S. had met in the final.
Despite missing many regular starters due to injuries, holidays and the Club World Cup, the No. 16 U.S. team achieved five wins against relatively weak opponents and secured their first Gold Cup final appearance since 2021. This match against 17th-ranked Mexico will be the last competitive fixture for both teams before they co-host next year's World Cup alongside Canada.
