Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticized Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after Bayern midfielder Jamal Musiala sustained what appeared to be a serious left leg injury during their loss to PSG in the Club World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday.

Musiala was injured late in the first half during a 50-50 challenge with Donnarumma.

The Italian goalkeeper secured the ball but knelt in shock upon realizing the severity of the injury. A stretcher was quickly brought to remove Musiala from the field.

Replays of the distressing injury were not displayed on the big screens at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl confirmed after the match that Musiala had been taken to the hospital.

"That's a situation where there was no need to challenge like that," Neuer told reporters via Sky Germany. "It's risky and shows a willingness to endanger the opponent."

"I approached him and asked, 'Don't you want to check on our player?' It's only fair to go over and offer well wishes. He did so eventually. Fairness is crucial ... I would have handled it differently."

Donnarumma later shared an Instagram photo of himself looking upset, along with a message for Musiala: "All my prayers and well wishes are with you."

"It didn't look promising," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. "From the footage, it seemed like some kind of ankle injury, but I'm not diagnosing it here."

He added: "What's really frustrating me right now isn't the result. I get that's part of football, but it's that it happened to someone who loves the game so much and is vital to our team."

Musiala, a 22-year-old who also represents Germany internationally, entered the match with three goals in the tournament, trailing Golden Boot leaders Ángel Di María and Marcos Leonardo by one. His Club World Cup goals raised his season total to 20, including 12 in the Bundesliga and three in the Champions League.
