Chelsea booked their place in the Conference League semi-finals despite losing 2-1 at home to Legia Warsaw in the second leg of their quarter-final on Thursday.
The result keeps Chelsea's pursuit of silverware alive, but their performance will do little to assuage the discontent of their supporters.
Despite winning the first leg 3-0, Enzo Maresca named a strong line-up with Cole Palmer, Reece James and Jadon Sancho all starting. Filip Jörgensen retained his place in the XI from the first leg, but his rash challenge earned Warsaw a 10th-minute penalty, which Tomas Pekhart converted to give them the lead.
Cucurella equalised for Chelsea on the half-hour mark after a well-worked move. It was his sixth goal of the season and he almost had a seventh shortly afterwards before VAR ruled it out for offside.
Spurred on by their vociferous supporters - who spent much of the game shirtless - Warsaw played with spirit. They went ahead again eight minutes into the second half when Steve Kapuadi scored from close range.
Chelsea pushed for a way back and Noni Madueke had a shot cleared off the line. Tyrique George, a half-time replacement for Nicolas Jackson, looked lively up front and had a late effort ruled out for offside.
