Last weekend’s Premier League fixtures formed part of a campaign in partnership with LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall, promoting equality and diversity in the game. the designated ‘Rainbow Laces weekend’ encouraged players to show support for the cause, with each team captain given a rainbow armband.

Ipswich Town skipper Sam Morsy was the only one not to wear the armband, citing his religious beliefs. Morsy is a practising Muslim, previously observing Ramadan during the season and speaking publicly about the importance of his faith.

Ipswich issued a statement, supporting Morsy’s right to choose whether to wear the rainbow armband: “We respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband, due to his religious beliefs. We will continue to grow an environment where all are valued and respected, both on and off the pitch.”

What is the Rainbow Laces weekend?

The 2024 Rainbow Laces weekend marked 11 years since the first in 2013. This year armbands, corner flag, ball plinths and handshake boards will be adorned with the rainbow flag across Matchweeks 13 and 14.

Visibility of LGBTQ+ causes is at a high but a 2023 report from The Athletic found that financial support for the charity has been slashed by the Premier League. The Premier league’s most recent contract with charity Stonewall halved the amount of annual funding. Adidas, too, has lowered its financial commitment in recent years.

“During this period, the League and clubs will showcase the work they carry out year-round to embed equality, diversity and inclusion in everything they do,” reads a Premier League statement on the Rainbow Laces initiative.

“This includes a range of activities and content with players, managers and fans, as well as highlighting community and education initiatives designed to encourage discussion and promote allyship with LGBTQ+ communities.”
